Unlocking two 1.21 features

The wind charge and the vault!

Brrr, did you feel that? It felt like a powerful gust of wind! Perhaps it’s because it’s still winter here in Sweden. Or perhaps it’s because a new 1.21 feature is going into testing today?

But before we breeze into finding out all about this 1.21 item, we have a block to look at.

No, not that block! This block.

The vault

The vault was released into snapshot testing on January 31 to the sounds of clapping and cheering in my Realm, because the vault makes multiplayer adventures more rewarding for everyone!

Unlike chests, the vault can’t be crafted, and can only be found in trial chambers. Also unlike chests, which can be completely looted and left empty by other players (or one particular player. You know who you are!) the vault rewards every player that unlocks it with a trial key once. Of course, there’s the small matter of winning the trial key, which means activating a trial spawner and defeating the waves of mobs that spawn from it, but let’s not worry about the details yet, shall we? Let’s keep our eyes on the prize: loot.

As each vault rewards every player that unlocks it with a trial key once,  it doesn’t matter if I’m the slowest, most scaredy-cat adventurer to have ever entered the trial chambers. So long as I nab that trial key, the loot will finally be mine! Muahaha! Muahahahaha! Muahaha–

Sorry about that, I got a little carried away. Where was I? Ah yes, loot. Which brings me to the next 1.21 feature I’d like to talk about:

The wind charge

The wind charge is a new item that drops from defeated breezes, allowing you to harness their powers!* Wielding the wind charge you’ll be able to launch a powerful projectile of air at your foes that'll not only deal damage on contact, but also send nearby mobs flying

*Unfortunately the wind charge doesn’t give you a set of Very Majestic Eyebrows™

The wind charge is another item that cannot be crafted, so if you want to get your blocky hands on one, you’ll need to start battling some breezes. The fight will be worth it though – I’ve heard dexterous players will also be able to use the wind charge’s knockback to boost their jumping ability! Wheee

How can I test 1.21 features?

You can test the vault by enabling snapshots for Minecraft: Java Edition, or previews/beta for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. The wind charge is available now for testing in Java Edition snapshots, and will be coming to Bedrock Edition preview and beta soon.

To install a snapshot, open up the Minecraft Launcher and enable snapshots in the "Installations" tab. To enable preview/beta for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, follow these instructions

*Preview is available for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Realms on Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS. Betas are available on Android (Google Play).

Test on your Realm!

If you are a Realm owner, you can also play the new snapshots, betas*, and previews* on your Realm! Any player who has an active Realms subscription is eligible to create a free testing Realm, so you can try out the new features with friends. Find more information on how to enable snapshots for Java Realms, and how to enable betas/previews on Bedrock Edition Realms*!

*Preview is available for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Realms on Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS. Betas are available on Android (Google Play).

Important note: testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different save folder from your main worlds.

Send us your feedback!

These features are all still in development, which means that the details outlined above might change as we iterate on them. So then why have we released them into testing? Because we want your feedback! Send your thoughts on the vault and the wind charge here, and report bugs at  bugs.mojang.com!
