But it doesn't have to be. I have a secret to tell you: there's a farm you can build to do all the drowned-slaying for you. It's going to take a lot of blocks and leaves, and an optional sea turtle egg if you want to make it extra efficient, but it's still way less effort than killing all those drowned yourself.
JC Playz has made his own tutorial on how to make an easy trident farm, which involves spawning a bunch of drowned in a big swimming pool of death in the sky, and then dropping them down into a convenient "kill chamber" where you can just swing your sword a few times and gather all that tasty experience.
The trident farm is pretty easy to build, relying mostly on solid blocks, which can be almost anything – cobblestone, wood, or even dirt if you don't care what it looks like. It might take a while to get all the blocks in place, so I recommend roping in a friend by promising them a free trident for their effort.
Any drops from the drowned will be funnelled into a chest, so you can just pick up whatever you want and chuck the rest that you don't need right into the sea. Don't worry about littering – any items will disappear in five minutes. Or be eaten by dolphins.
You should be able to get tridents within a few minutes with this farm, and even faster if your sword has the Looting III enchantment on it, which increases your chances of getting rare drops.
When you've got your trident, it has a very small chance of already being enchanted, but if it's not, you should head over to your enchanting table to put some cool trident-specific abilities on it. Unbreaking and Mending also work, but I highly recommend trying to get Loyalty – which makes it come back to you like a boomerang – and Impaling, which will increase the amount of damage it does to enemies.
If you're more of an adventurer than a slayer of beasts, then you'll want to check out Riptide, which makes you go SUPER fast in water, and can also be used to fly fast in the rain. Wheee!
