A peek at trial chambers

And the hostile mob that calls them home!

Minecraft Live might be over, but the fun of trying new features is just starting! Game director Agnes Larsson and a team of Mojang developers gave us a first look at some of the key features from the 1.21 update (landing in 2024) during the liveshow. My favorite part of the show? Jens' hair! But a VERY close second was when they ventured into a sprawling structure called trial chambers, and came face to face with a chaotic and challenging mob: the breeze.

Soon you can test the first iterations of these features yourself, because trial chambers, the trial spawner, and the breeze are all coming to snapshot, preview, and beta testing!

Trial chambers

A challenging structure

The trial chamber is a structure packed with new adventures and filled with traps, trial spawners, mobs, and (as an extra bonus) treasure! Trial chambers are procedurally generated, which means you’ll face a new challenge every time you venture into them, and find something different behind each door! Explore deeper and deeper and you might find yourself stumbling across resources that’ll help you, or mobs that’ll hinder you. The trial chambers are also home to a playful (and dangerous) hostile mob: the breeze!

The breeze

A mischievous mob

The breeze leaps dizzying circles around its opponent, and attacks using rapid blasts of wind that’ll blow you away if you’re not fast enough! These playful mobs might look cute, but you’ll need a unique strategy to deal with them, as well as a lot of bravery (or perhaps that’s just me? Ok, I’ll need a lot of bravery – hostile mobs are scary!) The breeze is sure to be a challenge for even seasoned survivalists, especially when you consider that trial chambers are also full of traps

Trial spawner

Trials and rewards for parties of all sizes

Speaking of challenges, my age-old tactic of sending my Realm buddies ahead of me into the fray and doing other very important things (like hiding) is going to be thwarted by the trial spawner.

The trial spawner is a cunning device that spews out a number of mobs based on the size of your adventuring party, which means it scales the challenge (and the reward!) to the number of players facing it. The blocks around the trial spawner can also hint at which mobs might spawn!

In the first version of this article, we said that the trial spawner creates different mobs depending on the room you find it in, and what’s around it. In fact, the blocks you find around the trial spawner can give a hint at what mobs might spawn, but they don’t determine it.

How to test these new features

Soon you will be able to test these features by enabling snapshots for Minecraft: Java Edition, or previews/beta for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. To install a snapshot, open up the Minecraft Launcher and enable snapshots in the "Installations" tab. To enable preview/beta for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, then follow these instructions.

If you are a Realm owner, you can also play the new snapshots, betas*, and previews* on your Realm! Any player who has an active Realms subscription is eligible to create a free testing Realm, so you can try out the new features with friends. Find more information on how to enable snapshots for Java Realms, and how to enable betas/previews on Bedrock Edition Realms*!

*Preview is available for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Realms on Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS. Betas are available on Android (Google Play).

Important note: testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different save folder from your main worlds.

Send us your feedback!

These features are all still in development, which means that the details outlined above might change as we iterate on them. So then why are we releasing them into testing? Because we want your feedback! Send your thoughts on the new trial chambers, the trial spawner, and the breeze once they're available to test, and report bugs at bugs.mojang.com!
