Can you beat this deep dark challenge?

See if you can best our writers' scores!

The challenge

Your task is simple: make it through the deep dark, all the way to the center, and retrieve the diamond I left in the chest! You'll nab +40 points for achieving that great feat, and an extra +10 points for making it back to base. If the warden finds you with the treasure, you'll lose your inventory and -20 points.

If the warden finds you before you reached the chest, you could claim +20 points for your bravery.

Are you feeling brave? Then let's begin!

You take a deep breath...

You slip out of the iron doors of your base, and follow the flickering torchlight downwards. As you jump from one step to the next, your movement sets off a sculk sensor, and a rattling wail lifts into the darkness. A cleverly hidden sculk shrieker! You’re going to have to be careful.

Ahead of you is a set of stairs and some instructions, explaining that your goal is to reach the center of the ancient city and grab one diamond from the chest that stands there. There’s even a handy arrow made of froglights, pointing to the chest! What do you do?

Run hurriedly down the stairs – the quicker I’m outta here, the better!

You make it to the bottom, and see that the floor is covered in sculk. There are a few catalysts up ahead, but you can’t see any shriekers. In the distance is an arrow made out of froglights. Those aren’t normally in ancient cities, right? It must mean you should head that way! How do you get there?

Crouch carefully down the stairs

Leap from the stairs – what’s fall damage, anyway?

You make it to the bottom, minus two hearts, and see that the floor is covered in sculk. There are a few catalysts up ahead, but you can’t see any shriekers. The stairs must be a trap! Find another way around

You try and edge your way around the stairs and end up triggering a sculk sensor. In a panic, you leap all the way to the bottom and lose 2 hearts.

You see that the floor is covered in sculk. There are a few catalysts up ahead, but you can’t see any shriekers. In the distance is an arrow made out of froglights. Those aren’t normally in ancient cities, right? It must mean you should head that way! How do you get there?

Why stop running now? Let’s sprint for it!

You run, as fast as your blocky legs can carry you towards the froglight arrow. Is it you, or is it getting darker in here? You pay it no heed, and keep running. Except WOW it’s really dark, and now you can’t see where you’re going! There’s a loud noise, like something’s erupting through stone. What do you do?

Uh-oh...

It’s a warden! It’s here! You hear the th-thump of its heartbeat, and then the sniff-sniff as it hones in on you. You close your eyes, and squeeze the torch in your blocky hand, and then—

Your score: 20 points!

Respawn at the beginning?

Slow and steady wins the race! Crouch at a glacial pace towards the markers...

You crouch and move as slowly and as quietly as you can. In fact, you're moving so slowly that you consider eating the bread in your inventory out of sheer boredom! While contemplating your options, you think you hear some noises somewhere, but you try and ignore them.

Five minutes passes, and you’re still crouching, but now you’ve found a bridge! You go over it, and there’s a wall of blue flame ahead of you, and what looks like a chest! What do you do?

Run for the chest!

You run, either not noticing all the sculk and all the shriekers around you, or not caring. As you throw open the chest a sculk sensor chitters beside you, and suddenly the room starts to get darker. Which is weird since you’re standing very close to lots of fire. What do you do?

Crouch towards the chest!

You can see the sheer amount of sculk around you, you’re not rushing at the last minute! You sneak towards the chest and open it, and the creak sets off a nearby sensor. You hold your breath and wait, but it doesn’t seem to have awoken the warden. You take a diamond from the chest, and then turn back to the darkness.

You did it! Now you just need to make it back to base…

Crouch back towards the base

You’re happy with your strategy, and you’re going to stick with it! You crouch towards the base, through long, ancient walkways and past glowing blue lanterns. Eventually you can see the staircase in the distance, leading all the way back to the base!

You made it!

You step inside the base, and show off your diamond proudly. You did it! And you have barely any scars to show for it. Even so, you might not be venturing back into the darkness any time soon…

Run towards your base

You have your prize, and now you want to go home! You start running, your sights set on the staircase in the distance and the weak yellow light of the torches set into them. Sensors are going off all around you, and you can hear the sculk shriekers wailing. You’ll make it! You’re sure of it!

You’re still sure of it as it starts getting dark around you, and as you start to lose sight of the staircase. Wait, who turned out all the lights? It’s too dark to see! What do you do?

Panic and run!

Perhaps you read how one brave writer made a run for it and survived, or perhaps it’s just sheer adrenaline, but you dash as quickly as your blocky legs can carry you. It starts to get darker around you but you don’t stop, you button mash ‘Jump’ and you just keep pushing forwards until finally, finally, you can see the stairs leading up to the base!

It looks high up! Get to higher ground

A bold strategy in a cave so dark, but you push on anyway! You use the few wooden blocks in your inventory to try and carve yourself a path so high up that no sculk sensor can find you! As you’re mining and placing blocks, you hear a shrieker activate in the distance. A bat? One of your friends? You don’t know, but you keep placing one block in front of the other until you run out of blocks. There’s that sound again! You turn, and…

Oof!

You weren’t killed by a warden, but by gravity!

A froglight arrow? That sounds suspicious! Let’s avoid it...

You are a brave adventurer – you don’t follow things like instructions! If everyone is heading towards that bright, froglight arrow that someone definitely put there on purpose, then you’re going to head in a different direction! Even if that direction is really, really dark…

Head left

You head left, into a huge patch of sculk! You’ve never realized how pretty it is before, all black and blue and shiny. You keep going, to see how big the patch of sculk is, and you trigger a sensor. Is it getting darker in here? You’re not sure! This patch of sculk is huge, and as you walk past another sculk sensor, you hear a loud shriek! What was that? Now, you know it’s definitely getting darker in here. And can you hear… heartbeats? What do you do?
