Since 2022, Mojang Studios and Kellogg’s have collaborated with the goal to build a better world where play, inclusivity, accessibility, and environmental awareness are key components of their missions.
Playgrounds and Trees
How Minecraft and Cereal helped build a better world
Mojang and Kellogg’s teamed up with Kaboom! to bring the creativity found in Minecraft into the real world. Kaboom! are experts in building sustainable and accessible playgrounds and have a strong focus on community outreach. Their focus is to end playspace inequity by building playgrounds where there usually are none and ensuring that everyone is welcome and able to play.
In 2022, Mojang, Kellogg’s, and Kaboom! organized a contest with the aim of highlighting the ingenuity and playfulness made possible via Minecraft. Participants were to design an accessible playground using Minecraft, and the winning submission would be built for real together with the local community. This was truly an opportunity to highlight the massive talent and creativity found amongst so many Minecraft players, resulting in a real-life playground!
Morgan Sloane – an industrial design student - has been playing Minecraft for over 10 years and came across the contest on the back of a Kellogg's cereal box. Intrigued, she put her Minecrafting skills into creating an accessible playground where everyone could join the fun, no matter what. Out of over 600 submissions, Sloane’s idea was picked as the winner.
“One takeaway from this experience for me is that you can still create interesting things in an unconventional form. You don’t have to use the latest, greatest technology to build something cool or something that works well,” Sloane said. “And playing Minecraft for 10 years has paid off!”
Sloane’s mushroom-themed playground was built in Marietta, Georgia, with Kellogg’s and Mojang donating $230.000 to Kaboom! to support them in building the playground.
Then, in 2023, Kellogg’s, Mojang, and Kaboom! launched the contest once more, this time with a focus on sustainability. The contest was, as last time, advertised on Kellogg’s packs, but now also accompanied with information about environmental sustainability.
More than 3.3k entries were submitted, and the winning playground was built in Fort Worth, Texas, made possible by a $250.000 donation from Kellogg’s and Mojang.
This playground will allow over 25.000 kids to play and have fun over the years!
A Better World – One Tree at a Time
Kellogg’s and Mojang then collaborated with the Arbor Day Foundation, which is the world’s largest tree-planting nonprofit. Together, the three organizations came together to restore and protect critical forests, as trees are essential when it comes to ecosystems, air quality, and creating healthier habitats for wildlife – among other things.
One aim of the collaboration was also to educate about the importance of trees and sustainable choices. Throughout the whole project, people could learn how to plant trees in Minecraft and about regenerative farming, as well as planting real trees in the real world, by following a few simple steps. Tips and tricks to a more sustainable lifestyle were also provided, making it easy for everyone to make smart choices and help build a better world. Additionally, for each purchased Kellogg’s product, Minecraft players could collect up to three exclusive DLCs, which all revolved around trees.
Minecraft players and Kellogg’s fans rose to the challenge, and thanks to a $250.000 donation from Kellogg’s and Mojang, Arbor Day were able to plant 250.000 trees across the US, thus aiding reforestation and promoting a greener world.
The Kellogg's and Mojang contributions have been fantastic, and it's also been exciting to see the Minecraft community go above and beyond to do their part. Both projects have been successful, but there is always more to do. We've got new projects coming in 2025, and we look forward to doing more together to build a better world.
