    Our Marketplace Picks: July 2019

    Our three favourite Marketplace highlights for the previous month!

    August, August, wonderful August. What isn’t there to love about August? Did you know, for example, that August 1st is Per’s Name Day in Sweden? Luckily for you and sadly for me, you’re not here to read about neither me nor August. You’re here for our monthly Marketplace pieces!

    As you may or may not know, the Minecraft Marketplace is home to some great pieces of content, made by an incredible bunch of talented people from the Minecraft community. These pieces can be anything – from narrated adventures and silly made-up sports, to challenging mini-games and fashionable skin packs.

    To help bring order in this chaos of neverending content, we have the content team. The job of this industrious rag-tag group is to play and review all items that make it to the Marketplace. From all these items, they pick three favourites from every past month. Let’s find out what the content team – this time represented by Oskar Thysell, Matthew “Moesh” Dryden, and Adam Martinsson – picked from July!

    Nebula HD

    Whenever I change my skin in Minecraft, I tend to aim for something simple. Nothing fancy or out of the ordinary. Even a simple attire such as a t-shirt would be just lagom for my Swedish taste. For this reason, it’s almost mindblowing to see the work LinsCraft has put into Nebula HD, a collection of 15 space-like skins with cosmic detail and style. You know what, forget the t-shirt and forget lagom, I want to be made of star stuff instead! I wonder what Moesh thinks?

    I'm a fan of skin packs which bring something new to the table. I can feel the passion for space put into this project. I think LinsCraft said it best:

    "We felt that the beauty of this scientific phenomenon in our universe should not be simply observed in pictures but also displayed through a more three-dimensional medium."

    Superheroes

    Superheroes seem to be a phenomenon we can’t grow tired of. We remain ever so fascinated by them, no matter the number of movies that get released. Well let me tell you, superhero movies are overrated. That’s right! Real fans of superheroes play games, especially Minecraft maps like Gamermode One’s Superheroes.

    Journey to Superhero City, where crime really DOES pay, because loads of superheroes have been brainwashed into evil wrong-uns! It falls up to you to become a superhero yourself, pick up the mantle (a metaphor, not an actual mantle) to stop the evil forces at work. Pick one of five heroic superpowers, like throwing fire, shooting lightning or smashing, and unleash them upon any wrongdoers to save the day! Adam, the content team’s very own superhero, has his own take on the map!

    Cruising down the street in a supercar while wearing a super-suit, it's difficult not to feel like a superhero. Suddenly, saving an entire city from an evil mastermind doesn't seem like that big of an issue anymore, even if more than a few supervillains stand in your way. Once you've mastered your powers I can especially recommend the firesuit for going extra fast – perfectly suited for speedruns!

    Nuclear Craft - Deserted City

    The world lies in ruins and deserted after a nuclear apocalypse. Strange, hostile creatures roam the planet and inhabit the abandoned cities. You, the player, have two options: stay in your underground shelter and die of boredom, OR, venture out into a harsh, empty city subjectively beautiful paradise, full of new flora, fauna, and deadly traps challenging obstacles! Oskar chose the latter.

    I remember reading that, in psychology, Sigmund Freud developed an idea of the 'death drive' – an inherent instinct towards aggression and self-destruction. Freud likely began developing this idea after watching players on his Minecraft server willingly bear-hug Creepers and take lava baths. Hey, sometimes you just wanna start over again with an empty inventory, which could be the charm with post-apocalyptic themes in games.

    Exploring the devastated world of Nuclear Craft is, to me, more freedom-filled than actually dystopian in this sense. Being that this is a mash-up pack, you can even apply these textures to one of your old worlds, and role-play that you've travelled far into the future and a disaster has struck. Oh, the animation when the shelter door opens is really cool also!
