Have you seen some of the amazing things people have made in Minecraft? Mob farms! Miniature supercomputers! Someone even made an in-game machine that’s powerful enough to run a version of Minecraft – minecraftception! These things are amazing, but they’d be totally impossible without our item of the month – the humble pile of redstone dust.
Redstone started showing up in the Overworld in July 2010, as part of the third Seecret Friday Update – the same release that added pressure plates, buttons, doors and levers. The game had previously featured gears, but they were removed when redstone was added.
Redstone ore, when mined with an iron pickaxe, breaks up into redstone dust – and that’s the best way to get hold of it. You’ll usually get four or five redstone dust per ore block, but more is possible with the use of a fortune-enchanted pickaxe. You can also find redstone dust in chests, in some structures, and it’s often dropped by witches.
