Let's Play: Over Mob

We create a new world and begin not completely unarmed for once. Instead we get to enjoy a guide book and a telescope. Score! Then again, we’ll need food soon and you can’t eat telescopes (trust us, we’re speaking from experience here (er, we mean, no we’re not)). 

The guide book warns us to reign in our expectations. Prime mobs are apparently rare, so it might be a long, long time before we encounter… hey, look, there’s one! A prime wolf! 

Why don’t we sparkle? Are we not eating enough glitter? Anyway, if you look at a prime mob through your new telescope, you’ll see a cheat sheet with loads of info about it. Abilities, attacks, how to tame it, etc. If you looked through a telescope at us, it would probably say ‘deeply regrets eating five gallons of glitter’.

Soon we’d be feeling even worse. For as we explored the Overworld, we stumbled across this:

What could it be? A creeper that’s trying out a glam new look? The answer to life, inner peace, and eternal happiness? Naturally, the only way to find out was to walk up to it and give it a punch.

Success! Well, kinda! Upon giving our new friend the ol’ knuckle-based hello, a screen of text popped up. It told us this was a Nether Star and that it could be used to summon a boss battle. ‘The boss is very challenging,’ the ominous text box warned ‘so make sure you’re well equipped before starting this fight’.

Pfft, we’ll be fine. We have a telescope AND a berry. Feeling more confident about this decision than any other we’d ever made in our entire life, we hit ‘SUMMON’.

Meet the Nether Star Falling Leader. Turns out this mob isn’t as cuddly as it looks. And it doesn’t look cuddly at all. Oh dear.

This monstrosity summons underlings to fight for it, has a devastating laser attack, an almighty Godzilla-worthy roar, and is fond of sometimes just punching you in the face. Hey, that’s our move! We think we may have set a new record for number of times died in a minute facing this thing.

Yes, because in an incredible stroke of good fortune/bad luck, we spawned right next to that Nether Star. Which means every time we’re defeated by the Nether Star Falling Leader, or NSFL to its friends, we respawn right next to it! 

And that’s how we spent our evening trying to defeat a monster of incredible power bare-handed. We didn’t even have our telescope anymore…

Is this the stupidest thing we’ve ever done? Does real life count? No?? Then this is definitely the stupidest thing we’ve ever done. We’re lucky to get one or two punches in and see maybe a millimetre come off NSFL’s health bar before we’re sent screaming back to the ‘You Died!’ screen

It gets even worse when some of NSFL’s more explosive attacks blow up the ground and open up a cave. A cave that was apparently full of prime hostile mobs eager to say hello. Fair warning, you may not be ready for how horrifying the prime zombie looks:

A smarter writer would have run away at this point. Good for them. Instead, we spent a miserable evening trying to cheat our way to victory. It’s hard to pinpoint which failed attempt finally convinced us to give up (622, maybe?).

But we vowed to one day return, well-armored and ferociously equipped, and finally defeat this boss for good. No matter how much crafting, hard work, epic fight-training montages it takes, we’ll put in the time to… oh, wait! We can just switch to Creative Mode, grab a sword, then switch back to Survival. Score!

Cheating? How dare you! But also, yes, fair point. And we probably would have gotten away with it too, had we not stared into the eyes of this prime chicken and suddenly been overwhelmed with guilt.

There’s apparently five of these new bosses to fight in this add-on. We think we’ll leave the other four for another day. Ideally a day a hundred years from now. With eighty new mobs to find, it’s not like we haven’t got plenty more to see anyway.

And for a while it’s a pleasant trip through the Overworld, full of prime ocelots and massive prime sheep (who sadly are still not very good at escaping wolf attacks). All looked to be going great until night fell and we met the prime Enderman.

Famously you should never make eye contact with an Enderman. But what about the prime Enderman? We’d lost our info-providing telescope ages ago, so decided the only smart thing to do would be to look it directly in the eyes to find out!

I didn't like that. Not one bit. So yet again a Let’s Play ends with us fleeing in terror and wondering why we always neglect to build a house.
