    The Minecraft Time Capsule

    Time to seal it up (and get one of your own)

    Time flies! Trust me, I know as I nowadays fall asleep in front of the TV, wondering why the subtitles are so small compared to “back in the day.”

    But time does fly! Minecraft turned 15 (!) last May! To celebrate the occasion, we decided to put together a time capsule and fill it with both physical and digital memories, trinkets, relics, and lots more!

    Deciding what to store inside the time capsule wasn't easy and took a broad effort. Many of the items would never exist without you, the players!

    The next 15 years

    At the Microsoft Visitor Center in Redmond, Washington, we’ve designed and put up this biome-inspired installation that will care for and nurture the time capsule (I guess even a time capsule needs love and sustenance?) until the counter runs out and it’s time to open it on our 30th anniversary, on May 17, 2039 (I’ve probably been replaced by a hologram by then or uploaded to the cloud).

    During those 15 years, you can spend time guessing what’s inside, get into spelunking, raise a llama, OR play Minecraft as you’ve been doing for the last 15 years! And even if Minecraft is already a teenager (they grow up so fast!), we have plenty of things planned for you to play around with, test, mine, and bop during the coming next decade and a half.

    The stuff inside

    There are over 50 items found inside the time capsule! Some are big and some are small, some are silly and some more serious. But they are all vital bits of the history of Minecraft, creating a plethora of historic tidbits that will now be stored for posterity!

    Your own time capsule

    To even further highlight this historic moment, everyone will get their own free in-game Time Capsule add-on* created by Oreville Studios!

    Just like the real deal, you can stuff it with whatever items or blocks you want to preserve (I’m going with sticks, oodles of sticks, you know, for roasting marshmallows fighting enemies). Once you’ve crammed it full, you can customize it and change its texture to your liking! Then, just pick for how long it should be sealed (anything from 1 second to 15 years), and it’ll make sure everything’s safe – even from potential thieves in multiplayer and nearby creeper explosions!

    So, get your own time capsule, customize it as you see fit, and why not share your creation on social media? Then, all you have to do is wait, wait, and wait some more.

    See you in 15 years! Oh wait, we’re not putting Minecraft.net in the capsule? There goes my sabbatical...
