Meet the cutest carnivores ever in Starfish Studios’ map!
I’ve always wanted to have a pet, but pets and me just don’t seem to get along. Every pet cat I’ve ever had has abandoned me to star in a terrible musical. My pet killer whale refused to get in the goldfish bowl. I had a list of even more examples, but my pet dog ate it D:
Perhaps a modern animal just isn’t for me? So let’s wind the clock back a few millennia and meet the pets of the prehistoric past by playing Baby Dinos by Starfish Studios!
This is part of our series Marketplace Mondays, where we play a Minecraft Marketplace map on the first Monday of every month. Not to be confused with Tuna Tuesdays, the incredible series where I review the same can of tuna on the first Tuesday of every month, and that the meanies who run this website refuse to publish >:(
Anyway, Baby Dinos might be the cutest Minecraft map I’ve ever played. Those hoping for a Jurassic Park-esque experience where you get eaten alive by raptors while Jeff Goldblum makes witty comments should look elsewhere (might I suggest a therapist's office?). Because Baby Dinos is a showcase for just how delightful a dinosaur can be. Turns out, very!
Baby Dinos gets an immediate thumbs up from me for not making me wait for the main event. The very second you start the map you’re in a corridor full of baby dinosaurs. I know they make sunglasses for blocking out the sun, but how about squeeglasses for making it safe to look at so many adorable creatures at once?
After about six thousand hours of admiring these delightful dinos, I remembered it’s my job to actually play the map. So in the spirit of temporary professionalism, I got started.
With the tutorial complete, I’m let loose on Dinosaur Island. You can explore on foot, if you’re boring, or you can hop in a safari car and speed around the isle if you’re cool and exciting like me! Oh, I’ve crashed it. OK, looks like we’re walking.
No matter, this walk is an absolute joy because there are baby dinos EVERYWHERE. Plus! I forgot to mention earlier that the game gives you a scanner that you can use to – yes! – scan the dinosaurs for more information. There’s tons of fun to be had just running around the island and scanning them up.
Odo Bird? What the heck is an Odo Bird? Oh, wait – the snow’s in the way of its name. Remind me to edit out this caption later so I look less stupid.
I was happily exploring the island, when suddenly the screen shook, flashed red, and one of my lovely healthy hearts disappeared. Damage? Had the baby dino’s betrayed me? Was it because I kept eating all the raw beef and bones?
Nope, although I should probably still stop doing that. It’s because night had fallen and hostile mobs were on the attack. Yes, in a shock twist that no one could possibly have seen coming, this dinosaur island is somewhat unsafe!
Desperate to find shelter, I hopped in another safari car:
I know, I’ll drive onto this ice! No hostile mob would be stupid enough to follow me out here! Gosh, I love being a genius.
…Think I’ll go for a walk, now I’ve finished parking my car underwater. Just like I, er, planned.
Ah, lovely fresh air. So much better than silly old driving. Besides, cars are bad for the environment anyway. They’re powered by oil, which is made from the ancient remains of dinosa… actually, I should probably keep my voice down.
Let’s get back to scanning our prehistoric pals!
Being forced to pick my favorite dinosaur is like a parent having to pick their favorite child – it’s easy! My favorite is the glorious green beauty below these lines of text.
Why?
Because, dear reader, have you ever seen anyone, man or beast, successfully pull off a top hat this well?
I was so excited to stick a hat on them that I forgot to scan and learn their name. Perhaps… Jeffery? It’s probably Jeffery. Hi Jeffery! Nice hat!
Seriously, this map is too full of adorable sights. I’ve hammered the screenshot button on my Xbox controller so many times that it’s no longer speaking to me. If you’re a dinosaur fanatic and fancy cataloging some cuties then you could do a lot worse than searching for Baby Dino’s in the Minecraft Marketplace, or clicking this line of lovely green text to be taken straight to its store page.
