Time to survive the first night…with a twist

Back in the day, walking to school surviving that first night in Minecraft used to be a raw, brutal, and harrowing nightmare! What? It still is? Well, bummer, but also – no sweat! You see, in the latest DLC – and free demo! – from Minecraft Education, you can take on that terrible first night experience with ease – all with a little help from AI!

Minecraft Education invites you to a fun AI and coding tutorial building on the last ten years of Hour of Code and our partnership with Code.org and Microsoft. This year, anyone can play Hour of AI: The First Night, a puzzle-filled world that challenges players to build shelter before sunset using a little code, a sprinkle of AI skills, and a lot of craftiness. Turn that first night into a breezy, comfy memory instead of a brand-new phobia for giant spiders, skeletons, and the sunset overall.

Code your way through that first night

You know how it goes (or maybe you don’t): you’ve spawned in a lush, chilly, sandy, or perhaps watery biome that feels rather nice and cozy. At least until the sun begins to give up and you feel a rising worry as you hear a rustle coming from the trees. Then – a shadow in the distance, creeping up on you until it’s not as distant anymore!

Yeah, well, no more! Because in The First Night, you’ll have your very own, trusty AI agent (you can call it whatever you want – I’m calling mine Mom Ultra Core Bot).

Through MakeCode programming in Minecraft Education (did you hear that? You can try coding in Minecraft!), you’ll get to teach your Agent to recognize patterns, classify resources, and coordinate “mini agent” helpers. The Agent’s behavior is similar to a real AI, as it learns from examples, and sometimes makes mistakes that require human correction (you must teach it which material is wood, or your first night shelter might not be... optimal).

But as your AI agent learns, it’ll go from “tool” to “partner” as it helps you plan, prototype, and automate the essentials needed for getting through your night, so you don’t become zombie chow!

Hopefully, training your AI Agent will help you become more of a calm, creative engineer, instead of learning about Minecraft the hard way: the classic panicky, frantic, desperate fight for survival that we’ve seen so many times.

Anyone can do an Hour of AI

This Minecraft activity is designed for players ages 7 and up. All you have to do is download and launch the Minecraft Education app and you’re in. No login required. It’s…get ready…fast, fun, and free (oh, and family-friendly!).

It’s important that we all learn a bit about these emerging AI tools regardless of whether we are afraid of the dark. In The First Night, you’ll learn plenty about AI literacy, like how AI learns and adapts, its capabilities, but also its limitations. In short, it’s a wonderfully Minecrafty lesson in how AI works with – of course – a hefty portion of fun. Play Minecraft Hour of AI today…and relive the adventure of your first night!
