The first features from our cutest drop yet

Unleash new versions of baby farm mobs into testing!

Brace yourself, fellow mob hoarders connoisseurs, for the first features from our cutest drop yet are here! Leading the way into testing with a whole new look are eight new versions of baby farm mobs. Befriend these tiny rascals, hear their sweet sounds, and craft them name tags in Java snapshot and Bedrock beta/preview now!

So what do these adorable new faces look like? Which details have our developers swooning? And what's it like wrangling seven meowing kittens as an audio designer? Let’s find out! 

“Until now, the baby mobs have been scaled down versions of the adult mobs but with big heads, but now our artists have given them unique textures and models that give each baby mob their own adorable look and identity!”

Meet the even cuter baby farm mobs

They might be tiny, but these wolf pups, kittens, piglets, calves, baby chickens, baby ocelots, lambs, and baby rabbits are even chunkier, floofier, and more charming than ever before, which means we’re simply going to have to build a much bigger base to fit them all. 

“Typically mobs in Minecraft have two-pixel eyes, but now baby mobs have just one which creates a new vibe for them, which is just adorable.”

Wolf pup

Barking their way into testing are chunkier versions of all nine wolf pup variants. Sniff around the different biomes to find them all, then tame your favorites with a bone and you’ll have friends for life!

“I just think there is something so charming with the new wolf pup design, maybe because it almost makes them feel like little stuffed animals.”

Kitten

All eleven variants of kittens have also had a squishy makeover, making them more purr-fect than ever! Seek these new cuties out in villages and swamp huts and tame them with raw cod or salmon and they might bring gifts in the mornings when they’re older!  

Baby chicken

New versions of baby chickens have hatched! They might be our tiniest baby mobs, but these cute chicks know how to ruffle feathers in and outside the coop. The three egg-cellent variants can be found in their respective climates: chilly biomes, tempered biomes, and warm biomes.

“The baby chickens are definitely a favorite too. They are literally just a cube zooming around with their twig legs and the tiniest wings.”

Rabbit

Hopping into testing with puffier tails and floofier fur are both the baby rabbit and the adult rabbit! Discover why this velvet-nosed mob might be our Game Artist Sarah Boeving’s favorite redesign: 

“I really hope players get to experience the new rabbit (both adult and baby!) hopping around. I'm especially fond of the "toast" variant and the history behind it. It was added in a while back to memorialize a player's pet which had gone missing. There's something really sweet about being able to immortalize the memory of dear ones in games.”

Piglet

Our little oinkers are smaller, stockier, and cuter than ever! Befriend the fluffy piglets in chilly biomes, the brown-coated piglets in warm biomes, and the iconic pink piglet trotting the temperate biomes.

Lamb 

As if lambs couldn’t be cuter, they now look like tiny puffs of wool with legs! But giving the eleven different colored lambs an ewe-nique look wasn’t the easiest thing: 

“It was really tricky deciding on what was the best route to take for the lamb. Initially I had a fluffy one with a big wool coat, but it didn't make sense gameplay wise. Mainly because it looked like it could be sheared like the adults (it can't) but also that they didn't really reflect real-life lambs very well. It was a tough choice but I'm really happy with the final baby sheep.”

Calf

All doe-eyed and soft-nosed, our five calf variants have a moo-some new look and graze different pastures based on the climate they are native to. Find the fluffy-coated cold calf in chilly biomes, the original calf in temperate biomes, the warm calf in sandy biomes, and the mooshroom calves in the mushroom fields. 

Baby ocelot

Our jungle-prowling baby ocelots got a majestic (yet squishy) makeover! With big green eyes, blocky paws, and teeny-tiny toes, the baby ocelot will make your collection of baby mobs in this first testing moment complete. Feed the adults raw salmon or cod, and they’ll keep creepers and phantoms away. 

“Odds are players will run into these features pretty quickly during their first session. Well, hopefully; Minecraft has a way of turning the odds against you.”

Craft name tags for your pets

With all these new baby mob designs waddling into Minecraft, you might be wondering how on earth you’ll find enough name tags for them all. Worry no more! Name tags are now craftable using paper and any metal nugget – so you can give your favorite mini mob the unique name it deserves!

Hear the custom baby mob sounds

Wait! Can you hear that? The little squealing? It’s the new custom baby mob sounds! Piglets, wolf pups, and kittens now have their unique heart-melting meows, squeaky piglet oinks, and happy puppy yaps.  

“Instead of the up-pitched versions of the adult sounds, I wanted to capture the uniqueness of a kitten meow and a puppy yapping to let them have their "own" personalities and bring more life (and cuteness!!) to the Minecraft universe.”

Our Audio Designer, Sandra Karlsson, had perhaps the best day on the job ever, recording the sounds of real-life kittens, puppies, and piglets for Minecraft. 

“I mean, imagine being surrounded by seven kittens climbing on you = dreamy!!? It was sometimes hard to make them make sounds – turns out animals can also get stage fright!"

Bedrock spawn egg functionality

Just like in Java Edition, you can use spawn eggs on adult mobs to spawn babies in Bedrock, too! So if you want to spawn a kitten, use a cat spawn egg on an adult cat, and voila! You now have a new mischievous little friend.

How can I test these features?

You can test these features by enabling snapshots for Minecraft: Java Edition, or by enabling previews/beta* for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. To install a snapshot, open up the Minecraft Launcher and enable snapshots in the "Installations" tab. To turn on an experiment in preview/beta for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition follow these instructions.

*New features are coming in the future and will require Minecraft Bedrock Edition or Java Edition (each sold separately). As development is ongoing, the features shown and their descriptions are subject to change. Feedback from the community will help us iterate these features into their final versions.
