    Bats, Pots, and Competitions

    Squeakily cute, storage-filled fun!

    Today marks the launch of a very serious competition that has been days in the making here at Mojang Studios. You might’ve seen that decorated pots went into testing with a storage function back in November, and today it’s launching into the game. This means that no matter which version of Minecraft you play, no matter which device, you’ll be able to spend between now and forever* stuffing your decorated pots with one stack of whatever item you wish!

    *With sleep breaks of course. Because phantoms. 

     

    PLAY WITH DECORATED POTS’ STORAGE FUNCTION TODAY!

    Squeak. 

    Did you hear that? It sounded like something squeaked nearby. But back to the matter at hand: decorated pots! 

    If you've spent your time since the Trails & Tales update brushing for sherds and filling your base’s shelves with decorated pots, then now you can turn those pots into piggy banks! Or weapon caches! Or secret treasure holders! The possibilities are endless, only limited to the fixed amount of items available in Minecraft, which decorated pots can store exactly one stack of. 

    Place items inside your decorated pots using a hopper, or by right-clicking said pot while holding whatever you wish to store. The fun part is retrieving your items: shatter your decorated pot using projectiles (or by punching them) as broken decorated pots will drop their items. If you prefer to keep your decorated pots unpunched, you can also use a hopper to remove items!

    Now, because we’re known for our competitiveness here at Mojang Studios, and because there’s something deeply satisfying about throwing a projectile at another person’s precious pot, I thought this would be a smashing opportunity to get some insight into what other Mojangers will be filling their pots with! So, I’ve devised a very serious competition: Tops of the Pots!  

    Squeak. 

    I definitely heard something this time! Is there a new contender for our competition? Well, it’s too late, valiant competitor, because the application deadline has closed, and soon our judge will arrive to decide the ultimate winner!

    TOP OF THE POTS 

    ENTRY 1: BAKED POTATOES 

    In real life, the baked potato itself acts as a decorative (and delicious) pot that can store stuff, so it only makes sense, right?
    What's more fun than stuffing your decorated pots with baked potatos? Shattering them to retrieve the potatoes, of course!

    After weeks of anticipation, our Community Manager Gustav has decided to fill his pot with something epic and delicious. Baked potatoes! 

    “In real life, the baked potato itself acts as a decorative (and delicious) pot that can store stuff, so it only makes sense, right? I'll keep it in my pot in case we ever decide to do a Shrimps & Chives update, allowing the height of Swedish cuisine to be recreated in-game. Anyone else hungry right now?” - Gustav

    ENTRY 2: SPLASH POTION OF FIRE RESISTANCE 

    Our new safety regulations require a fire resistance potion in every room in a clearly marked container – “smash pot in case of emergency!"

    I definitely heard something that time! Where is that curiously adorable squeaking coming from? 

    Our second contender is Matthew Gatland, one of our System Designers. Matthew is a big fan of decorated pots, and an equally big fan of keeping his in-game horses not on fire, which is a goal I can get behind. That’s why he’s filling his pots with Splash Potions of Fire Resistance! 

    “One time I was renovating our Nether Base and I accidentally let lava into the stables. Many horses died that day. Our new safety regulations require a fire resistance potion in every room in a clearly marked container – “smash pot in case of emergency!” - Matthew Gatland

    Your horses will thank you, Matthew! And so will I (horses are my favorite!). 

    ENTRY 3: GHAST TEARS 

    our only favorite Java Realms writer Oskar Thysell, is using his pots to make a point.

    Fun to collect and even more fun to store in decorated pots, contender number three is using the decorated pots’ new storage function for – ghast tears! But not because he wants to make Potions of Regeneration, or craft some End crystals. Nope, our only favorite Java Realms writer Oskar Thysell, is using his pots to make a point.

    I personally feel very attacked by ghasts anytime I venture to the Nether, so I stand with you, Oskar. Collect those tears! 

    Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!  

    Aha! Our Tops of the Pots judge has arrived in the nick of time. Where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you!

    As well as the storage function of decorated pots, you can now spot the retextured bat in the game, too! Bats have been flapping around Minecraft’s caves since 2012, when they were released alongside witches and zombie villagers as part of the Pretty Scary Update.

    Now they’ve received an art refresh, so not only do they look less scary more consistent with the rest of the game, but they also have adorably huge bat ears! This retextured passive mob is getting added to Minecraft today – which is why it makes a perfect judge for Top of the Pots! Now then, please excuse me while we confer on the results of this very serious competition… 

    Squeak squeak. Squeak! 

    I completely agree. Congratulations to our joint winners: Oskar, Matthew, and Gustav! The adorably re-textured bat makes a great point: it’s not about winning. It’s about stuffing your decorated pots with one stack of whatever you want, and then smashing them open again!
