Scoreboards coming to bedrock

No llamas were harmed in the making of this feature

If you’re playing the Windows 10, Xbox One, VR, mobile devices or Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft then you're playing the Bedrock version of Minecraft. Which means you'll soon be able to use a new feature we're adding to this version – Scoreboards!

(In fact, you'll be able to try it today if you're playing a beta version of Minecraft on Windows 10, Xbox One or Android – find out more about playing the beta here.)

What are Scoreboards? Glad you asked! They're a new system you can use to set, query and view scores for players in your game. For example, ever wanted to brag about how many zombies you've defeated and have the numbers on-screen to back it up? Now you can!

So using a scoreboard, we can see that Invisible Friend has defeated 25 zombies, which isn't even close to the 100 zombies taken out by another player. Come on, Invisible Friend! Up your game!

Scoreboards aren't just handy for keeping track of how many zombies you've sent back to the grave. Players can use them for all sorts of things!

You could use them to keep count of wins, kills and deaths. Create economic systems, record progress, make timers or record stats for players. There are loads of possibilities – play around with them in the beta and see what you can come up with!

HOW TO USE SCOREBOARDS IN THE BETA

If you're playing Minecraft on Xbox One, Windows 10 or Android, click this lovely line of green text to see how you can play the beta version of Minecraft.

Once you're in the beta, you can activate scoreboards by using Commands. A command is a string of text you enter to activate something in the game. Once you're in Minecraft, just press the / key to start:

[1/6] - Once you're in the beta, create a new world. Then, on the create world screen, make sure you enable experimental gameplay.
[2/6] - Then select 'Create'. Here I am playing Minecraft! Why haven't I built anything cool or impressive? Er, because I'm too busy showing you how to use scoreboards!
[3/6] - Press the '/' key and this screen will pop up. You can now start entering commands!
[4/6] - If we type in '/scoreboard' a small explanation of what scoreboards will appear, along with a list of suggested commands.
[5/6] - Try typing '/scoreboard objectives add zombies_killed dummy "Zombies Killed"' As you might have guessed, this will track how many zombies you've killed. Feel free to try something less morbid!
[6/6] - Give us feedback on the feature by selecting 'Beta Feedback' in this menu! I wish Steve wouldn't stare at me while I select it though. Creeps me out :(

Right now we only support a dummy criteria which means you have to manually update the scores yourself. But with future updates, we'll be adding automatic criteria, which means you'll be able to automatically track blocks broken, XP, items found, etc.

Let's manually update our 'zombies killed' criteria by using the command /scoreboard players add * zombies_killed 1 (the little asterisk means this command will apply to everyone's score on the scoreboard).

[1/2] - Press the / key and then enter the command 'scoreboard players add * zombies_killed 1' to manually increase the score.
[2/2] - It worked! As you can see, I've entered it a few times to increase my score even though I'm a total liar who've never once successfully killed a zombie in Minecraft. Heh heh heh.

But scoreboards aren't just for keeping score. Map makers can use them in all sorts of creative ways! For example, you could create a clock that says hello every 30 ticks using command blocks and fake players! Or a mini-game wherein you have to save a poor llama surrounded by TNT (and for those of you who only clicked on this story to make sure the llama survived, don't worry. It's totally fine – we promise!)
