Getting Better Equipped with 4Ks Studios!
This month we wanted to write about a Marketplace content pack called ‘Less Tools’. It would take all your tools away and make Minecraft a tedious experience where you were doomed to punch everything forever and ever and ever and wish all the best resources weren’t punch-proof.
Sadly, ‘Less Tools’ doesn’t seem to exist, quite possibly because it’s the worst idea of all time. Ugh, fine. We’ll talk about More Tools by 4Ks Studios instead then…
We begin, as all great stories do, in a mysterious cave. And of all the hundreds of caves we’ve woken up in with no memory of how we got here, this has to be one of the prettiest. Plus there’s a chest full of iron armor, some basic iron tools, and tons of steaks. Nice!
But you’re not reading about something called ‘More Tools’ to read about boring old iron. You wanna know about the new stuff. Luckily, we soon picked up a guide book full of exciting recipes for all sorts of new tools, armor, and weapons.
Hey, we also like to read books by punching the pages! It’s why our local library is no longer speaking to us.
We explored the cave a little further. Clusters of amethyst crystals? Score! Weird plumes of smoke? Worrying! Villagers with nice haircuts offering us quests? Jealousy that our hair doesn’t look this swish!
Longing to get some fresh air, we noticed two passages of floating text. One says it’ll teleport me nearby and the other ‘teleport far away’. Now as regular readers of this award-deserving Let’s Play series will know by now, we never make mistakes. But maybe we should have thought through punching the ‘far away’ option.
No matter! We celebrate teleporting to our new destination by crafting one of the new recipes, an amethyst chestplate.
Pretty snazzy, no? Well, no, because we haven’t crafted the rest of the armor set. Drat!
Not to worry, we’ll just craft the rest of it after I grab some more amethyst from that resource-rich cave we spawned in! You know, the one we just chose to teleport far away from. …Oh.
Luckily for us, a Creeper came over to say hello and blew us up in the process, respawning us back inside the cave. Awww, thanks Creeper!
A complete amethyst armor set certainly looks ‘the business’ and gives a neat status effect (it occasionally heals you!). But if we wanna build more of the new stuff, we’re gonna need to track down the new ores. Good thing someone left some instructions on how to find them here, eh?
Of course, if you just wanna try out the new stuff without exploring/are on a tight Minecraft.net deadline, you can always sneakily switch to Creative Mode. Did we do that? Er… hey, look over there!
…Huh? Oh, you’re back! And just in time too. We, um, totally just got back from a long and difficult and totally real mining expedition. Now we’re rich in new ores. Topaz, opals, sapphires, rotten flesh (oh, we didn’t mean to pick that up), and rubies. Time to celebrate by crafting…
The Amethyst Sword is cool, as is the more-powerful Amethyst Scythe (no wonder the grim reaper is so fond of them). But they’ve both got nothing on the Amethyst Super Sword. This crafting recipe demands an amethyst sword be surrounded by rare topaz.
Costly? Very! But oh so worth it. As you can see in the above screenshot, the amethyst super sword summons lightning strikes on every swing. I’d like to see Thor, God of Thunder manage that! (Thor, if you’re reading this, and we both know that you are, this was just a joke - please don’t hurt us).
You don’t have to track down rare ores/allegedly cheat in Creative Mode like we did to see all the new stuff. Take the bone armor set, which you can easily construct yourself after a busy night fighting skeletons. Do keep in mind though that wearing this makes it easy to be mistaken for a skeleton yourself, so maybe give everyone on your server a heads up. Or lean into it, and embrace skeleton life by filling your friends with arrows - you do you.
Anyway, the brilliant thing about this bone armor is that whenever anyone has the cheek to attack you, friendly skeletons pop up out of nowhere to help you fight back! We tested this theory by jumping in a lava pool. Unfortunately, that meant our eyes were too busy melting to see if any friendly skeletons showed up. Oh well.
Pew pew pew! Honestly, using a purple sci-fi weapon in Minecraft just feels wrong. Like starting a new game of Halo and being told that you have to build Master Chief a lovely little house before it gets dark. Still, More Tools is wise to make you earn your hilariously out-of-place sci-fi toy. It requires super rare uranium to be crafted!
But even the blasters aren’t the rarest rewards More Tools has to offer. To get those you’ll have to visit somewhere called - gulp - the Nightmare Realm.
The game makes it very clear that you shouldn’t even think about entering the Nightmare Realm without crafting a full set of Nightmare Armor first (otherwise you’ll literally take damage every second just by being there). It also advises bringing a Nightmare Pickaxe. We also advise not visiting at all.
We craft and hop into a Nightmare portal which soon pops us into the world’s least-promisingly named realm. Hey, it’s… not so bad? Sure, the music is a little ominous and it’s a bit hard to see, but we’d hardly call it a nightOHGOODNESSGRACIOUSWHATISTHAT?!!?
