Once upon a time, Minecraft’s lakes and rivers were more or less empty of life. In the earliest versions of the game, water was basically just an obstacle and a danger. That all changed in the tenth and final of the game’s seecret updates – in September 2010 – when our item of the month, the fishing rod, was released.
Fishing rods are easy to make and easy to use. You’ll need three sticks and two string, both of which should be straightforward to obtain, even in the very early game. Arrange the sticks in a crafting grid in a diagonal from bottom left to top right, and then position the string along the right hand side in the two remaining spaces. Voilà – a fishing rod is yours.
