Taking Inventory: Wind Charge

You’ll likely first encounter wind charges in a trial chamber – a mid-game combat challenge that can be located by buying maps from cartographer villagers. Inside, you’ll be confronted by a number of challenges, including a hostile mob called the breeze which attacks by flinging wind charges at you.

When thrown, a wind charge will fly in a straight line through the air – if it hits another creature, that creature will take damage and be knocked back. But that’s not all. When a wind charge hits a closed door, fence gate, or trapdoor, it’ll open and vice versa. When it hits a button or a lever, it’ll be pressed or flipped. When it hits a bell, it’ll be rung. When it hits a decorated pot, the pot will shatter. When it hits a lit candle, the candle will be extinguished.

How can you defend yourself from this onslaught? Well, just like when fighting a ghast, attack is the best defense. Swing your weapon at juuuuust the right moment, and the projectile will be deflected away – ideally back towards its sender. Defeat a breeze and it’ll drop a breeze rod, which can in turn be crafted into wind charges at a ratio of 1:4.

Just like fire charges, wind charges can be loaded into a dispenser to be fired on command. Give a loaded dispenser a redstone signal and it’ll release a wind charge at whatever’s standing in front of it. Whoosh! That’s what I’m talking about!

So next time you’re slashing and slicing your way through a trial chamber, make sure to pause to pick up some breeze rods and craft them into wind charges to add a new weapon to your arsenal. You’ll be glad you did!
