Giving back to the ocean with Coral Crafters

Coral reefs are incredibly important to all kinds of marine species. In fact, over a quarter of marine life depends on them for survival. Unfortunately, global issues including climate change, pollution, and overfishing, are putting them in danger. 

Though it sounds like a fancy new block from one of our game updates, Biorock is a real-life wonder that uses electrical currents to crystalize minerals on underwater structures, creating artificial reefs for our aquatic friends.

Inspired by our in-game Aquatic Update, the Coral Crafters project harnessed the power of this amazing technology, along with the dedication and creativity of our community, to help restore coral reefs in our precious IRL oceans.

We teamed up with community creators Rabahrex,  Logdotzip,  and Stacyplays for this project. They worked with their fans to design a bunch of unique structures in Minecraft. Our community then voted on their favorites and we placed them at the bottom of the ocean, to develop into future reefs. A great example of how Minecraft, some of our popular community members, and our incredible player base can come together and create real change.

We also challenged our players to place 10 million blocks underwater. That might sound like it would take a long time to achieve but within a few days we reached the goal and donated $100,000 to The Nature Conservancy as a result.
